safety partnership
CCTV
As mentioned in previous pages, part of the partnership with Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council has implemented CCTV cameras around Shrewsbury's town centre. These cameras now have a view around the town and also over three of their major car parks. All of the cameras are top quality and in full operation 24 hours a day, some of the cameras are focused of particular hotspots and others are just on general areas of the town.
Unlike some communities, all the cameras that have been put up have been made clearly visible so that everyone knows exactly where they are and that they are in full recording. The cameras are watched 24 hours a day which means that if a accident or problem occurred the CCTV operator and alert the right people in order to help/solve the issue without having to leave the cameras unwatched, the operator has a direct line with the local police station, this means that after they have alerted the police they can continue to fill them in with the situation and giving them the relevant information they need.
The cameras were but in so that people will feel safe in the town at all times of the day as well as to encourage them to use facilities or go to local attractions that they may previously feared. As well as this the cameras identify local criminals and anti social behaviour allowing them to take the correct action against the right people. However they have a very strict policy on confidentially of people caught on camera and all films and images are deleted after 31 days of being recorded unless they are needed for an ongoing investigation.
